The Syrian Civil War officially began in March 2011, when victims were accounted for during the first clashes in cities during anti-government demonstrations. These events were part of the so-called “Arab Spring”. Within a few months the first armed clashes had begun, but it was only in 2012 that the conflict became a real war between the army loyal to President Assad and the armed groups of the FSA. The latter, in 2013, were replaced from within my Islamist and jihadist forces, starting with the al-Nusra Front.
It is at this point that ISIS enterd into the scene. 2014 marked the proclamation of the Islamic caliphate between Syria and Iraq, with many territories under ISIS control. The turning point in the conflict took place in September 2015, when Russia took to the field alongside the Syrian Assad government. To date the army of Damascus controls 60% of the territory, with the east of the country in the hands of the Kurds. The former rebels and al-Nusra control only the province of Idlib.
