<p>Per diverso tempo la ricerca sui droni ha inseguito un obiettivo preciso: <strong>renderli invisibili</strong>. Materiali trasparenti, rivestimenti mimetici, sistemi ottici sofisticati e tecnologie di occultamento hanno rappresentato le strade più battute nei laboratori di ricerca e nei programmi militari. <a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2026/07/new-spinning-drone-hides-in-plain-sight?fj=1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Alla Northwestern University</strong></a>, però, il punto di partenza è stato completamente diverso: più che nascondere il velivolo, gli ingegneri hanno deciso di sfruttare <strong>un limite della percezione umana</strong>, quello che impedisce all&#8217;occhio di distinguere con precisione un oggetto quando ruota a velocità molto elevata.</p>



<p>Da questa intuizione è nato <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/39785329/phantom-twist-drone-invisible-warfare/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phantom Twist</a>, un drone sperimentale che non diventa realmente invisibile, ma si trasforma in una sagoma sfocata, tanto da confondersi con lo sfondo e risultare <strong>molto più difficile da individuare</strong> rispetto ai velivoli tradizionali. Il progetto &#8211; presentato alla conferenza internazionale <em><strong>Robotics: Science and Systems 2026</strong></em> di Sydney &#8211; introduce <strong>un approccio inedito</strong> alla progettazione dei sistemi a pilotaggio remoto: invece di modificare l&#8217;ambiente circostante o il materiale del drone, <strong>modifica il modo in cui il cervello umano lo percepisce</strong>. È una differenza sostanziale, perché apre una nuova linea di ricerca nella <strong>cosiddetta bassa osservabilità</strong>, destinata a interessare non soltanto il mondo della robotica ma anche quello della sicurezza, della sorveglianza e, inevitabilmente, delle applicazioni militari.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Come nasce Phantom Twist: quando è l&#8217;AI a progettare il velivolo</strong></h2>



<p>Il cuore dell&#8217;innovazione è il progetto stesso del drone: nei comuni quadricotteri il corpo centrale resta fermo mentre ruotano soltanto le quattro eliche, lasciando sempre visibile la struttura principale. Phantom Twist adotta invece una soluzione completamente diversa: <strong>dispone di un solo motore e di un&#8217;unica elica</strong>, mentre l&#8217;intero corpo del velivolo ruota in senso opposto fino a circa <strong>25 volte al secondo</strong>. A questa velocità il sistema visivo umano non riesce più a ricostruire nitidamente la forma dell&#8217;oggetto, che appare come <strong>una leggera foschia sospesa nell&#8217;aria</strong>.</p>



<p>Per arrivare a questo risultato i ricercatori hanno affidato un ruolo decisivo <strong>all&#8217;intelligenza artificiale</strong>: gli algoritmi hanno generato <strong>circa 20 mila possibili configurazioni del drone</strong>, valutandone stabilità aerodinamica, distribuzione delle masse e livello di visibilità. Successivamente hanno riorganizzato migliaia di volte la posizione di batteria, circuito elettronico, contrappesi ed elica fino a individuare la disposizione più efficace. <strong>Ogni configurazione è stata poi simulata su oltre cento scenari reali </strong>e analizzata attraverso un modello capace di riprodurre il funzionamento della percezione visiva umana. Secondo i test del gruppo di ricerca, il risultato finale è <strong>un drone circa dieci volte meno visibile </strong>rispetto a un quadricottero convenzionale, senza compromettere la stabilità del volo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dalla ricerca ambientale alla sicurezza: le applicazioni di una tecnologia a doppio uso</strong></h2>



<p>Le possibili applicazioni vanno ben oltre l&#8217;esercizio di laboratorio. I ricercatori immaginano innanzitutto un impiego <strong>in ambito civile</strong>, dove <a href="https://it.insideover.com/tecnologia/mgi-e-vigilar-il-progetto-anglo-italiano-per-produrre-droni-dattacco-nella-motor-valley.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">un drone</a> meno evidente potrebbe monitorare colonie di uccelli, osservare ecosistemi fragili, ispezionare ponti, dighe, linee elettriche o impianti industriali riducendo al minimo l&#8217;impatto della propria presenza. In molti casi, infatti, animali e persone modificano il proprio comportamento non appena notano un velivolo in volo, alterando la qualità delle osservazioni. <strong>Ridurre questa interferenza significa ottenere dati più affidabili</strong> senza ricorrere a tecnologie particolarmente invasive.</p>



<p>Allo stesso tempo è difficile ignorare <strong>le implicazioni strategiche</strong> di un sistema concepito per essere meno percepibile, in quanto un drone di questo tipo potrebbe trovare spazio nelle missioni di ricognizione, nella sorveglianza discreta di infrastrutture critiche o nelle operazioni di raccolta informazioni. Il prototipo, tuttavia, è ancora lontano da una maturità operativa: il rumore dell&#8217;elica rimane facilmente udibile, alcune barre di supporto e i cavi sono ancora visibili e la particolare configurazione rotante limita la manovrabilità rispetto ai quadricotteri tradizionali, soprattutto quando si tratta di effettuare cambi di direzione rapidi o trasportare sensori aggiuntivi. Sono limiti che i ricercatori riconoscono apertamente e sui quali stanno già lavorando.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>La nuova frontiera della competizione tecnologica passa anche dalla percezione umana</strong></h2>



<p>Più che un prodotto destinato ad arrivare presto sul mercato, Phantom Twist rappresenta un&#8217;indicazione della direzione che potrebbe prendere <strong>la prossima generazione di sistemi autonomi</strong>. Negli ultimi anni la competizione internazionale si è concentrata <a href="https://it.insideover.com/tecnologia/ma-lia-e-davvero-meno-costosa-del-lavoro-umano.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sull&#8217;intelligenza artificiale</a>, sulla miniaturizzazione dell&#8217;elettronica e sull&#8217;autonomia decisionale dei droni. Ora si aggiunge un&#8217;altra variabile: <strong>la progettazione della percezione</strong>. Rendere una macchina meno riconoscibile senza ricorrere a sofisticati sistemi di occultamento significa sfruttare direttamente il funzionamento dell&#8217;occhio umano, trasformando un limite biologico in un <strong>vantaggio tecnologico</strong>.</p>



<p>È una prospettiva che interessa tanto <strong>la ricerca scientifica quanto le industrie della difesa</strong>, sempre più orientate verso piattaforme autonome difficili da individuare e capaci di operare in ambienti complessi. Il gruppo della Northwestern University sta già sviluppando versioni future con materiali ancora più trasparenti e sistemi di propulsione meno rumorosi. Se questi ostacoli verranno definitivamente superati, il valore di Phantom Twist non risiederà soltanto nella sua forma o nella sua meccanica, ma nell&#8217;aver dimostrato che la prossima evoluzione dei droni potrebbe non passare dall&#8217;invisibilità assoluta, bensì <strong>dalla capacità di rendersi quasi impercettibili agli occhi di chi li osserva.</strong></p>

<p>La risposta alla domanda se i droni abbiano reso obsoleti gli elicotteri da attacco è forse arrivata da <strong>Anduril</strong>. La società statunitense specializzata in tecnologie militari a intelligenza artificiale basata in California ha infatti recentemente presentato <strong>Thunder</strong>, un drone autonomo a due rotori basculanti pensato per essere un mezzo collaborativo per gli elicotteri da attacco come gli AH-64 Apache dell&#8217;esercito USA.</p>



<p>Il <strong>convertiplano</strong>, a trave di coda singolo e due derive a V di circa 90 gradi, è in grado di trasportare dieci missili Hellfire o settantasei razzi da 70 mm e il primo volo è previsto per il 2027, come annunciato dall&#8217;azienda. L&#8217;armamento è posizionato in stive laterali e appeso a pannelli estraibili, soluzione che forse è stata scelta più per mantenere le linee aerodinamicamente pulite che per motivazioni riguardanti la <em>stealthness</em>, data l&#8217;importante risposta radar dei due rotori basculanti. </p>



<p>Anduril <a href="https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/anduril-unveils-armed-drone-gunship-to-fly-with-apaches/?sfnsn=scwspwa">riferisce </a>che il velivolo nasce come risposta all&#8217;attuale ambiente aereo di superficie, diventato uno dei più letali sul campo di battaglia, dove gli elicotteri d&#8217;attacco e i loro equipaggi sono sempre più esposti al rischio di munizioni circuitanti, sistemi di difesa aerea economici e sorveglianza costante. Queste condizioni, secondo l&#8217;azienda, hanno portato le manovre dei velivoli ad ala rotante a una situazione di stallo e indicano un <strong>futuro guidato dai sistemi autonomi</strong> per questo tipo di velivoli d&#8217;attacco. Thunder è progettato per moltiplicare la potenza di fuoco e aumentare la sopravvivenza degli attuali e futuri elicotteri/convertiplani d&#8217;attacco e d&#8217;assalto con equipaggio, affiancando le piattaforme pilotate anziché sostituirle.</p>



<p>Quest&#8217;ultimo punto è forse fondamentale per rispondere alla domanda di partenza: nella mente visionaria dei progettisti di Anduril, gli elicotteri hanno e avranno ancora un ruolo nel campo di battaglia. <a href="https://it.insideover.com/difesa/i-droni-sostituiranno-gli-elicotteri-da-attacco-tesi-affascinante-pero.html">Dalle colonne di InsideOver</a> avevamo già esaurito questa questione, quando abbiamo sottolineato che il mezzo ad ala rotante serve non solo a distruggere un obiettivo, ma è uno strumento per occuparlo col personale quando si tratta di aeroporti, ponti e altre strutture fondamentali per il progresso di una battaglia. Nondimeno, l&#8217;elicottero d&#8217;assalto resta ancora un modo rapido per dispiegare truppe sul campo. Proprio per questo, avevamo postulato l&#8217;<strong>integrazione di sistemi <em>manned </em>con quelli <em>unmanned </em></strong>ad ala rotante, come poi Anduril ha confermato con la presentazione del suo Thunder.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Il triplo delle munizioni</h2>



<p>La società riferisce che il convertiplano da attacco è la variante specifica per la difesa di una <strong>piattaforma a duplice uso</strong> sviluppata in collaborazione con <strong>Archer Aviation</strong>, azienda produttrice di aerotaxi elettrici, che porta nel settore della Difesa l&#8217;esperienza maturata nel campo della propulsione elettrica e della progettazione dei rotori, sviluppata per il settore commerciale. Secondo l&#8217;azienda, una <strong>configurazione ibrida-elettrica</strong> e a rotori basculanti combina il decollo e l&#8217;atterraggio verticali con un&#8217;efficiente volo di crociera, mentre i rotori a velocità variabile riducono il fabbisogno energetico e il consumo di carburante e minimizzano la traccia acustica durante l&#8217;ingresso a bassa quota. Anduril afferma che questa combinazione conferisce a Thunder l&#8217;autonomia necessaria per il dispiegamento globale, oppure, in alternativa, il velivolo può essere imballato in un container standard per il trasporto via aerea, stradale, ferroviaria o marittima. </p>



<p>Le configurazioni del carico utile sono descritte con un livello di dettaglio insolito. I <strong>vani interni modulari</strong> nella fusoliera principale e nella parte anteriore possono ospitare munizioni di precisione, razzi, carichi utili per la guerra elettronica, armi anti-drone e merci. Il modulo principale è configurabile con dieci missili aria-terra come Hellfire, JAGM o il Barracuda-100M di Anduril, sedici piccoli droni da ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) ed EW Altius-600 o settantasei razzi da 70 mm, oltre a dodici sistemi anti-drone aggiuntivi nella parte anteriore. Secondo Anduril, il vero punto di svolta risiede nell&#8217;impiego in team: tre Thunder abbinati a ciascun Apache offrono a una Brigata di Aviazione da Combattimento <strong>un aumento di tre volte delle munizioni disponibili </strong>senza esporre ulteriori piloti al pericolo, a una frazione del costo di una formazione equivalente con equipaggio.</p>



<p>Il velivolo utilizza il <strong>software Lattice for Mission Autonomy</strong> dell&#8217;azienda, che gestisce il comportamento in formazione e la logica di volo, consentendo ai piloti di dirigere l&#8217;aeromobile attraverso un comando piuttosto che con cloche e pedaliera, grazie anche a un sistema di elaborazione di bordo che combina sensori passivi e attivi selettivi con visione artificiale, dati cartografici ed edge computing, progettato per mantenere il drone in navigazione e tracciare le minacce anche in caso di GPS, visibilità e comunicazioni degradate o interrotte. L&#8217;azienda afferma che il software integra i dati dei sensori e della missione di tutta la formazione in un quadro tattico comune, in modo che il velivolo migliori le piattaforme circostanti anziché limitarsi a svolgere la propria missione. <strong>Anduril dichiara che sono già stati completati diversi voli di prova </strong>con i modelli a grandezza naturale, ed il primo volo è previsto per il 2027. Secondo l&#8217;azienda la configurazione a duplice uso, condivisa con il sistema civile di Archer, rappresenta la strada per raggiungere le economie di scala e le filiere di approvvigionamento necessarie per una produzione su larga scala a costi accessibili.</p>



<p>Vorremmo ora chiudere con una nota di colore cinematografica: i più appassionati di pellicole d&#8217;azione avranno notato che il Thunder assomiglia molto a un altro drone del grande schermo, visto in una nota serie di film post apocalittica: <em>Terminator</em>. Skynet è già qui?</p>

<p>Stando a quanto si apprende, il <strong>drone Reaper</strong> dell&#8217;<strong>Aeronautica Militare Italiana </strong>andato <strong>distrutto in Medio Oriente</strong> era &#8220;<em>rimasto alla base aerea di Ali Al Salem dopo che Roma ha deciso di non trasferirlo per evitare qualsiasi mossa che potesse essere percepita come un coinvolgimento nella guerra contro l&#8217;Iran</em>&#8220;. Il velivolo, distrutto a terra nel corso di un attacco missilistico, è diventato un bersaglio nonostante che l&#8217;Italia non abbia partecipato all&#8217;<strong>Operazione Epic Fury</strong>.</p>



<p>A riportare la notizia è stato il&nbsp;<em>Corriere della Sera</em> che, sulla base di fonti autorevoli e informate sui fatti, ha riferito che il drone andato distrutto nel corso di un attacco iraniano sferrato il 15 marzo contro la base aerea di Ali Al Salem, in Kuwait, era un <strong>MQ-9A Reaper</strong>, o <strong>Predator B</strong>, dell&#8217;Aeronautica Militare Italiana, colpito mentre si trovava all&#8217;interno del suo hangar. Il velivolo a pilotaggio remoto faceva parte della flotta di sei Predator B del 32° Stormo dell&#8217;Aeronautica Militare Italiana ed era stato assegnato al<strong>Task Group Araba Fenice</strong> del Comando Nazionale Contingente Aereo Italiano/Task Force Aerea Kuwait per svolgere missioni di <em>Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance</em> nell&#8217;ambito di Prima Parthica, il contributo italiano alla campagna multinazionale contro Daesh in Iraq e Siria. Il Task Group Araba Fenice opera dalla <strong>base aerea di Ali Al Salem</strong>, in <strong>Kuwait</strong>, dall&#8217;ottobre 2014.</p>



<p>Poco dopo l&#8217;attacco, lo Stato Maggiore della Difesa italiano aveva rilasciato la dichiarazione ufficiale: &#8220;<em>Questa mattina, la base aerea di Ali Al Salem, in Kuwait, che ospita personale e mezzi statunitensi e italiani, è stata bersaglio di un attacco con droni che ha colpito un hangar che ospitava un velivolo a pilotaggio remoto appartenente all&#8217;Aeronautica Militare Italiana. Il velivolo è stato distrutto. Ho immediatamente parlato con il Colonnello Mangini per accertarmi delle condizioni del personale italiano presente alla base. Al momento dell&#8217;attacco, tutto il personale era illeso e non coinvolto. Ho prontamente informato il Ministro della Difesa Crosetto dell&#8217;accaduto e rimango in costante contatto con lui per monitorare continuamente la situazione di tutti i nostri contingenti all&#8217;estero</em>&#8220;. Secondo quanto si apprende, una delle opzioni prese in considerazione dalla nostra Aeronautica Militare era stata quella di far decollare e dislocare altrove tutti i velivoli schierati nei siti a rischio per evitare che potessero essere colpiti a terra, ma si è ritenuto che una &#8220;<strong>mossa difensiva</strong>&#8221; di questo tipo avrebbe potuto essere interpretata come un atto ostile. </p>

<p>All&#8217;epoca dei fatti alcune fonti OSINT diffusero l&#8217;ipotesi che, oltre al drone, <strong>due caccia Eurofighter</strong> dell&#8217;AM fossero stati &#8220;danneggiati&#8221;. Questa informazione non trova ulteriori riscontri né conferme. Sempre stando a quanto riferito, sottolinea <strong>David Cenciotti </strong>di&nbsp;<em>The Aviationist</em>, quattro Eurofighter italiani erano schierati in Kuwait al momento dell&#8217;attacco e tre di questi hanno fatto ritorno in Italia pochi giorni dopo. Ciò ridurrebbe gli eventuali danni a un solo velivolo, qualora tali danni fossero stati effettivamente inflitti. L&#8217;Aeronautica Militare Italiana, lo Stato Maggiore della Difesa e il Ministero della Difesa non hanno rilasciato informazioni in merito. Il drone MQ-9A distrutto a terra nel raid di ritorsione del 15 marzo rimane pertanto l&#8217;unico velivolo perso dall&#8217;AM nello scontro che ha infiammato il Golfo Persico e attende ancora una ricostruzione definitiva.</p>



<p>L&#8217;MQ-9A è un sistema aereo a pilotaggio remoto di classe strategica, capace di operare a media e alta quota con lunga autonomia. È impiegato principalmente in<strong> missioni di intelligence</strong>, <strong>sorveglianza </strong>e <strong>ricognizione (ISR)</strong>, ma può svolgere anche compiti di pattugliamento terrestre e marittimo, ricerca e soccorso, scorta di convogli e protezione di infrastrutture e forze dispiegate. L&#8217;integrazione tra i sensori di bordo e l&#8217;attività degli equipaggi consente di individuare minacce, monitorare vaste aree operative e condividere rapidamente le informazioni raccolte con i partner della coalizione.</p>

<p>Non si fa in tempo a scrivere di una <strong>possibilità di de-escalation</strong>, che l’Iran richiede rilevanti modifiche per la sede e il formato dei negoziati fissati con gli Stati Uniti, e un <strong>drone iraniano</strong> viene <strong>abbattuto sul</strong> <strong>Mar Arabico</strong> da un caccia americano, mettendo potenzialmente a rischio la messa a terra dei colloqui che si spera possano portare a un accordo sul programma nucleare iraniano, e una distensione decisiva nell’intera regione, scongiurando un’azione militare americana contro obiettivi militari e figure apicali dell’<em>establishment</em> di Teheran, già messo a dura prova dalla destabilizzazione portata dall’ondata di proteste e rivolte che sta attraversando l’intera repubblica islamica.</p>



<p>Nelle scorse ore, un <strong>caccia F-35C </strong>decollato dal ponte della <a href="https://it.insideover.com/guerra/la-portaerei-uss-abraham-lincoln-punta-liran-unaltra-volta.html">USS Abraham Lincoln</a> ha abbattuto un drone da ricognizione iraniano che si era avvicinato “troppo” al Gruppo da Battaglia della portaerei statunitense schierata in Medio Oriente.</p>

<p>La notizia dell’abbattimento &#8211; che ha coinvolto un caccia della Squadra d’attacco dei Marine Fighter 314 e un drone di sorveglianza iraniano del tipo <strong>Shahed-139</strong> che stava volando in prossimità della portaerei con “<em>intenzioni poco chiare</em>” – è stata diffusa da <em>Reuters </em>proprio mentre il portale <em>Axios</em> riportava che fonti accreditate hanno rivelato che gli emissari di Teheran hanno chiesto di cambiare il luogo e alcuni particolari non trascurabili dell’i<strong>ncontro fissato</strong> per venerdì 6 febbraio tra l’inviato speciale <strong>Steve Witkoff</strong> e il ministro degli Esteri iraniano<strong> Abbas Araghchi</strong>. L’incontro, che, se avverrà, non si terrà più a Istanbul ma a Muscat, in <strong>Oman</strong>, e non dovrebbe più prevedere la presenza di mediatori di Arabia Saudita, Emirati Arabi Uniti ed Egitto, come si era accordato in precedenza, ma sarà in forma bilaterale.</p>



<p>In serata la <em>Tasnim News Agency</em>, agenzia statale iraniana affiliata al Corpo delle Guardie Rivoluzionarie Islamiche, ha confermato la perdita di un drone di sorveglianza sul Mar Arabico. Le fonti citate dichiarano che il drone è riuscito a trasmettere i dati e le immagini della sua ricognizione prima di perdere il contatto.</p>

<p>Così, nel giro di <strong>appena 24 ore</strong>, il processo di de-escalation tra Washington e Teheran appare fortemente a rischio per la manovra improvvisa del drone, che secondo i funzionari del Comando Centrale degli Stati Uniti ha deviato improvvisamente la sua rotta, e una questione di forma che non dovrebbe influire sul vero obiettivo dei negoziati: un accordo sul nucleare che possa fissare un <em>deal </em>nel lungo periodo. Non resta che sperare che i colloqui, a differenza del drone, giungano a destinazione senza ulteriori <em>turbolenze</em>.</p>

However, a shift in dynamics has already emerged at this early stage as on paper Russia should have won and taken Ukraine quickly but that hasn’t happened. I contend that there have been three significant shifts in military dynamics resulting from this war: the increased perception of the value of the individual soldier, the effectiveness of cheap drones and the increasing value of intelligence gathering capabilities over raw numbers.</p>
<h2>The increased perception of the value of the individual soldier</h2>
<p>Before the war, most assumed that tanks and armoured vehicles would be the deciding factor, with Russia able to overwhelm Ukraine by numbers alone.</p>
<p>That has proven to be false. The reason? Thousands upon thousands of anti-armour weaponry flooding into Ukraine from around the world. The sheer number of these weapon systems has demonstrably changed the war&#8217;s course. I cannot overemphasise that the number of cutting-edge anti-tank missiles shipped to Ukraine in recent months is breath-taking. In short, such a vast arsenal of these small, portable weapons may be unprecedented in a modern war.</p>
<p>Britain alone says it has sent around 4,000 anti-tank weapon systems; Germany around 1,000, Norway around 2,000, Sweden around 5,000 and the U.S. an unpublicised but massive number of missile systems. Other nations have also sent weapons.</p>
<p>Anti-tank weapons aren&#8217;t new, but their saturation in this conflict is new, and it&#8217;s causing a massive shift in thinking, in both defensive and offensive terms.</p>
<p>It is clear the invasion is not going to plan. This is partly due to <strong>Ukrainian resistance</strong> and Russian errors, but anti-tank weapons pouring into Ukraine in numbers never seen before are a factor. The armies sending these weapons would undoubtedly have had fewer available per soldier than Ukraine now has; this has highlighted how effective individual soldiers truly are when appropriately equipped.</p>
<h2>The effectiveness of cheap drones</h2>
<p>The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, now becoming a war of attrition, shows that cheap, lower end technology can be used effectively against high-end threats. Despite weeks of bombardment, Ukraine has kept up a fierce defence of its cities. One of the key enablers of this defence are Turkish-made drones. The drones are being used to carry out &#8216;pop-up&#8217; attacks on Russian forces with lethal effectiveness, surprising many in the west, including me.</p>
<p>The poster child of cheaper but effective combat drones is the <strong>Bayraktar TB2</strong> uncrewed aerial vehicle which carries lightweight, laser-guided bombs. The aircraft have previously excelled in low-tech conflicts, and Turkey has sold them to more than a dozen countries, including Azerbaijan, Libya, Morocco and Ethiopia.</p>
<p>Over the relatively high-tech battlefields of Ukraine, however, the drones have carried out repeated but unexpectedly successful attacks. The Turkish drones, quite frankly, shouldn&#8217;t be making a meaningful impact because they are medium-altitude, slow-flying aircraft with a large radar cross-section. But they most certainly are making a meaningful difference.</p>
<p>Ukrainian forces have been essentially flying in at a low level and then coming up and raiding with them, striking targets of opportunity. Before this conflict, no one would have seriously expected a low-cost drone to be making such a great difference, but they have proven their worth, and people are taking note of this shift in dynamic.</p>
<h2>The increased value of intelligence gathering</h2>
<p>The war in Ukraine, in my view, is perhaps the best example of why intelligence gathering capabilities might matter just as much, or more than, raw numbers. As things stand, <a href="https://www.insideover.com/war/the-role-of-us-intelligence-in-the-ukraine-war.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>NATO&#8217;s intelligence</strong> </a>infrastructure functions well and is adequately supported by a computerised network that is continually improved, especially against cyberattacks. NATO members and, in fact, almost all western military forces regularly hold exercises to improve these skills. Russia does not.</p>
<p>Ukraine is, essentially, borrowing this capability from the western alliance as nations share real time intelligence with the country.</p>
<p>Ukraine is showing that small and agile forces equipped with intelligence are much better than a large force bumbling around. The key to providing support and defeating enemy attacks is effective intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance capabilities. These capabilities allow for attacks against logistics and other enablers, forcing Russian frontline units to be cut off from the fight after their supplies run out.</p>
<p><strong>NATO countries</strong> have learned that aircraft capable of detecting and monitoring the locations of enemy forces are more valuable than a large number of battalions operating with less guidance and that end up pumping thousands of rounds into empty fields or forests. Boosting intelligence-gathering capabilities, even at the cost of the reduced size of combat forces, is proving to be of paramount importance in Ukraine, more so than previously thought.</p>
<p>One hundred fully equipped troops moving intelligently on the battlefield are worth more than one thousand with scarce supplies and decent intelligence-gathering capabilities. Numbers do not fight, people do, and people learn how to do it effectively with what they have.</p>
<p>While some of the above may seem obvious, some may be old and forgotten concepts, but I believe that they represent a new strategic environment. The invasion of Ukraine will be discussed at length for years. People will debate over what the biggest shifts in military dynamics to emerge from the conflict are, but I believe the three I have outlined above are the most important.</p>

Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, was <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/18/iran-nuclear-deal-trump-mohammad-javad-zarif-sanctions">in New York this week</a> to meet with US negotiators to put an end to the turmoil between the two nations. Even Thursday, the second day of Zarif’s US visit, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/iran-oil-tanker-gulf-crisis-smuggling-revolutionary-guard-lark-island-a9010321.html">seized a ship</a> smuggling Iranian oil, although it appeared to be a smaller vessel rather than a large tanker.</p>
<p>“The vessel that Iran towed to its waters after receiving a distress call was later seized with the order from the court as we found out that it was smuggling fuel,” Iranian authorities reported.</p>
<p>Zarif downplayed the event, telling reporters that it happens a few times every week and is done as a countermeasure against smugglers. However, last week Iran also targeted a British tanker which had to be defended by the Royal Navy. As a response, the British military deployed two additional vessels to the strait and the US increased its military involvement. Tankers are frequently escorted throughout the shipping channel and the practice has been justified in a year of tanker attacks, some from Iran, others by an unknown state actor.</p>
<p>Thursday evening, US President Donald Trump revealed that an American naval ship, the USS Boxer, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/18/politics/trump-us-destroyed-iranian-drone/index.html">took down an Iranian drone</a> by using an electronic jammer. Trump said the drone approached the ship from a distance of 1,000 yards while ignoring multiple warnings.</p>
<p>“This is the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran against vessels operating in international waters,” Trump declared. “The United States reserves the right to defend our personnel, our facilities and interest and calls upon all nations to condemn Iran&#8217;s attempts to disrupt freedom of navigation and global commerce.”</p>
<p>That commerce is the largest concern with volatility in the region. A mere whisper of the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz seems to cause a spike in oil prices. Wednesday, Zarif <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-17/iran-says-it-could-close-strait-of-hormuz-but-doesn-t-want-to?srnd=politics-vp">addressed the idea</a> in an interview with Bloomberg Television.</p>
<p>“We certainly have the ability to do it, but we certainly don’t want to do it because the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf are our lifeline,” Zarif said.</p>
<p>Security is paramount to keeping the passage open, he elaborated, but this means secure transit waters for everyone, not only Western countries. Overcrowding exacerbates the problem. Zarif recalled the 1988 incident in which the USS Vincennes destroyed Iran Air Flight 655, a commercial airline, killing 290 civilians after mistaking it for an Iranian fighter jet. The presence of several navies, oil tankers, military and civilian aircraft, and now drones creates an atmosphere that could easily lead to mishaps on top of the intentional military engagements.</p>
<p>While it’s unlikely Iran would close the strait, Zarif likely mentioned it to keep the idea fresh on the minds of American diplomats so they would remember the stakes involved in their negotiations. Brining up the 1988 incident, a time when the US was patently in the wrong, was a move designed to show the world that America is infallible.</p>
<p>Most importantly, during Zarif’s visit, he made the first effort of either side to reach a substantive deal which would hopefully see an end to the tit-for-tat attacks between Washington and Tehran. As part of the agreement pitched by Zarif, Iran would allow enhanced inspections of its nuclear programme. Furthermore, he said that the Iranian Parliament would ratify the Additional Protocol of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This component would give inspectors more access to Iranian facilities to verify that no nuclear weapons are in development. Tehran actually already complies with the Additional Protocol as part of the Obama-era nuclear deal, but Zarif hopes that solidifying it through legislation will make his deal more appealing to Trump. Under the previous nuclear deal, Iran was set to ratify the protocol in 2023 in tandem with the US Congress lifting sanctions.</p>
<p>Zarif proposes both sides take those measures now without waiting four more years. The deal he put forth may be enough to win over Trump, but it is still a far cry from the 12-point list of demands that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made last year. Aside from nuclear restrictions, those conditions primarily focus on an end to Tehran’s support for proxy militias, including the Houthi rebels in Yemen whom Saudi Arabia is currently fighting.</p>
<p>Neither Trump nor officials from his administration have issued an official response to Zarif’s proposal yet. Regardless, Zarif’s visit to the US and his willingness to open the negotiation process is a positive sign that an agreement might be achievable.</p>

The strikes were designed as a response to Iran downing an unmanned U.S. drone earlier in the day. While no American lives were harmed during the drone takedown operation, Trump tweeted, “Iran made a very big mistake!”</p>
<p>All eyes were on Washington Thursday evening as people wondered if the day was finally here: the day the U.S. begins military attacks against Tehran. Until yesterday, the conflict between the U.S. and Iran had been a war of words with leaders on each side starkly contrasting one another. While Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has been more reserved in his public statements and reiterated that his nation has no desire for war, Trump on the other hand tweets nearly every day on the issue. His lack of experience holding public office and impulsive persona can give the impression that he is ready to fight, or rather, send U.S. soldiers to fight.</p>
<p>That fight didn’t break out yesterday and might not for some time if Iran continues to respond to rash threats and tone-deaf twitter rants with calm and collected, reasonable statements. Iran’s downing of the U.S. drone Thursday was significant for several reasons. First, it broke from Tehran’s practice of maintaining a passive attitude. Previously it had been reluctant to attack U.S. military assets despite them being scattered all around the region.</p>
<p>Secondly, Iran claimed responsibility for the strike. Following a series of tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman, Tehran vehemently denied having a role in the operations. The fact that Iran is willing to own up to the missile strike on the reconnaissance UAV is telling. It means that Tehran is unafraid to push back when it feels threatened and it has no qualms about admitting its involvement when necessary.</p>
<p>The UAV shot down was an RQ-4A Global Hawk manufactured by Northrop Grumman. Iran managed to down it using a new variant of its Raad surface-to-air missile system (SAM). The revelation that its <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/iran-missiles-drone-shoot-down-1445042">domestically-produced SAM</a> is capable of taking down a U.S. drone is likely to have military analysts working overtime as they recalculate Iran’s military potential.  While the nation is well-known to be fond if its missile collection, launching them and successfully striking a target is another matter entirely.</p>
<p>Tehran claimed the U.S. drone had violated Iranian airspace. Furthermore, the head of the Revolutionary Guards aerospace division stated that there was also a U.S. plane that also crossed into Iranian airspace while flying near the drone. The Revolutionary Guard could have attacked the plane too, but chose not to, he said.</p>
<p>Meanwhile the U.S. has asserted that the drone was in well-established international waters near the Strait of Hormuz when it was attacked. U.S. Central Command released a map Thursday evening showing the drone’s flight path, but skeptics have reason to <a href="https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/report-trump-approved-military-strikes-against-iran-but-pulled-back-after-planes-we-1.7399239">doubt its accuracy</a>. Not only did it take several hours after Iran released its own map of the incident, but Central Command also made several errors while labeling it.</p>
<p>There will likely never be conclusive evidence proving either side correct, but for some Trump administration officials, that may not matter. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Central Intelligence Director Gina Haspel argued in favor of military retaliation, according to anonymous administration officials. During the deliberations in the White House Situation Room, Pentagon officials cautioned Trump not to make a rash decision because it could push tensions with Iran past the point of return. Furthermore, escalating the conflict with a military response would likely imperil the lives of American soldiers and diplomats working in the region.</p>
<p>In the end, Pompeo was swayed to convince Trump that the sanctions he imposed on Iran are having a long-term effect, therefore a retaliatory strike wasn’t necessary. The president’s tweets on the matter seem to have confirmed this line of thinking.</p>
<p>“Sanctions are biting &amp; more added last night,” Trump tweeted.</p>
<p>He failed to detail the new sanctions, but did elaborate that he felt the planned military operation was “no proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.” In his words, he asked how many Iranians would be killed and was given an answer of 150.</p>
<p>The best scenario for both sides would be to return to the negotiating table with the intention of forging a new nuclear agreement, but that does not appear to be happening anytime soon. Intermediaries such as <a href="https://www.insideover.com/politics/will-abes-mideast-mediation-effort-anger-irans-regional-rivals.html">Japan</a> and <a href="https://www.insideover.com/politics/qatars-web-of-geopolitical-relationships-threaten-its-stability.html">Qatar</a> have also yielded no solid results in deescalating the crisis.</p>

<p>Officially named global startup leader by the OECD, Israel has unquestionably built a high-tech innovation eco-system that operates with relatively little support from the country’s government. More than 300 global technology companies operate in this country of 9 million people and funding for new tech reached US$7 billion in 2018.</p>
<p>The secrets to Israel’s high-tech success: Engineers there get fantastic hands-on experience while doing their stint in the army, Israeli IT entrepreneur Ofer Tziperman told Gli Occhi della Guerra in an interview. And the ability to combine the strengths of tiny, innovative startups with high-tech giants is another.</p>
<p>But let’s talk about bras. That’s right, women’s bras.</p>
<p>In 2011, a young Israeli software developer named Orit Hashay set out to found a company that would use high-tech to make it possible for women to find the perfect bra (for male readers, female friends assure me that this is one of the great challenges of modern day existence).</p>
<p>Hashay devised a solution involving crowdsourcing, combined with artificial intelligence, and convinced an investor to lend her $350,000 to get started. Isreali VC firm FirstTime was also an early supporter.</p>
<p>“I founded Brayola using Israeli tech to start up in New York City,” Hashay told Gli Occhi della Guerra in an interview. “We wanted to get going in the US, because the warehouse system for fashion there functioned well with our logistics.”</p>
<p>The idea for Brayola was, and still is, to ask women to talk about their favorite bras, and to share that experience with other women. “I was looking for a bra myself, and a friend told me about one she really liked, and that a friend of hers really liked. So I thought, why can’t women find all this information in one place?”</p>
<p>Thanks to a specialised algorithm and artificial intelligence, women can easily source the bra they’ve always wanted, as the technology works with their requests to find very similar profiles among the five million Brayola has online.</p>
<p>Today, Brayola earns more than US$30 million per year thanks to the five million bras for which it has data online, along with 200 brands in partnership.</p>
<p>Even selling a product for women, Hashay says that it was difficult to get the overwhelmingly male high-tech crowd to take her seriously. But, having won them over, she’s ready to expand Brayola to new markets. “We are going to expand to Europe soon, and Asia too eventually. Europe is a bit of a challenge, because of the variety of sizes and styles involved, but we are working on it – we have a lot of experience to draw on.”</p>
<p>High-tech solutions to real-life problems are what Israeli tech is all about, and recent startup SolarEdge addresses some of the most basic issues involving energy.</p>
<p>“SolarEdge started with five guys who met in the Israeli army, where we learned a lot about technology,” explains  Lior Handelsman,VP of Marketing and Product Strategy and Founder at SolarEdge, in an interview with Gli Occhi della Guerra.</p>
<p>When they got out of the army, the group decided to work in the solar energy industry, which had begun a period of intensive growth. “It struck us, at the time, that solar energy was being produced all over the world, but it was rarely being managed proactively – it would either be sold to the grid, or, when the grid didn’t want it, it was wasted.”</p>

<p>The UN’s panel of experts on Yemen is probing whether “foreign experts” helped the rebels assemble and upgrade their unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which can now hit targets some 1,500 km away.</p>
<p>Saudi Arabia, which leads a military coalition against the Houthis in support of the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, has blamed such arms transfers on arch-foe Iran and Hezbollah militants from Lebanon.</p>
<p>“Beginning in August 2018, the panel began noting the deployment of extended range unmanned aerial vehicles with a range that would allow the Houthi forces to strike targets deep into Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates,” said the UN report.</p>
<p>Houthi rebels have increasingly used drones during the war, including last month’s hit on a military parade at Al-Anad air base in government-held Lahij province that killed at least seven people, including high-ranked Yemeni officers.</p>
<p>Rebel drones have travelled further. In July last year, a Sammad-3 armed drone carried out three strikes some 1,500km away on Abu Dhabi&#8217;s international airport. UAE officials denied the attack occurred.</p>
<p>In a similar incident in September, officials at Dubai International Airport denied knowledge of another raid, after a Houthi-linked television network described another Sammad-3 drone attacking the transit hub.</p>
<p>Long-distance drone strikes would represent a breakthrough for the Houthis, who have no air force and achieved most of their military gains in Yemen with assault rifles, missiles, off-roaders and rocket launchers.</p>
<p>Earlier in the war, from 2015 to 2016, the Houthis were limited to importing “complete or partially assembled weapons systems”, such as drones and ballistic missiles, from overseas, the experts said in the report.</p>
<p>“They now increasingly rely on imports of high-value components, which are then integrated into locally assembled weapons systems, such as the extended-range unmanned aerial vehicles,” said the report, which the UN released on Wednesday.</p>
<p>“The panel is continuing to investigate whether the Houthis are assisted in the process by foreign experts.”</p>
<p>The UN experts did not say which foreign powers they were probing, but in previous reports they have pointed to similarities between Houthi drones and ballistic missiles with weapons systems made in Iran.</p>
<p>Tehran has repeatedly denied that it provides military support to the Houthis, who seized the Yemeni capital Sanaa in 2014 and ousted President Hadi. Riyadh launched an offensive to push back the rebels and restore Hadi to power the next year, backed by the UAE.</p>
<p>The rebels control Sanaa and the key port city of Hodeidah, an entry point for most of the imports to Yemen and which has seen fierce fighting between Houthi and pro-government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition.</p>
<p>The warring sides agreed to a ceasefire in Hodeidah during UN-brokered talks in Sweden in December, and UN monitors are on the ground overseeing a pullback of forces from the port in a mission that has made little progress.</p>
<p>The ongoing war has claimed the lives of at least 6,800 civilians, plunged Yemen into a dire humanitarian crisis in which 15.9 million people face severe hunger and has wrecked the national economy.</p>
<p>Government forces and the Saudi-led coalition have made “significant progress” on the ground against the Houthis, the UN experts said, but the “aim of restoring the authority of the government throughout Yemen is far from being realised”.</p>
<p>The various Saudi- and UAE-backed militias across Yemen share few “common interests” and are increasingly at odds with each other, leading to the “fragmentation of the country” into fiefdoms of “parallel security forces”, the report said.</p>
<p>In Yemen’s south, the UAE backs the Security Belt Forces and other militias who oppose Hadi and “continue to advance &#8230; secessionist aspirations,” added the experts.</p>
